What to Pack for a Black Hills Resort Weekend
A practical packing list built around our pool, spa, and dining rooms, by season.
The Black Hills' elevation means weather here doesn't always match what guests expect from the season on the calendar. A few packing notes that come up often at check-in.
Year-Round Basics
Swimwear year-round — our resort pool sits under a glass roof and stays open through winter. A layer you can add or remove, since Main Street's elevation means temperatures can swing 15 to 20 degrees between morning and afternoon even in summer. One nicer outfit if you're planning dinner at The Bonanza Chophouse, which leans slightly more dressed-up than our other dining rooms.
Summer (June – August)
Days run warm, evenings cool off fast once the sun drops behind the ridgeline. Pack a light jacket even in July if you're planning to be out on Main Street after dark. Sunscreen and a hat if you're doing any of the day trips outside town — there's less tree cover than guests expect at this elevation.
Fall (September – October)
Layers are the whole game in fall. Mornings can start near freezing while afternoons climb into the 60s. A packable rain shell is worth it too — fall weather in the Hills changes faster than the forecast usually predicts.
Winter (November – March)
Real winter gear, not just a city coat. Insulated boots with grip matter more than a heavy jacket if you're planning to walk Main Street's sidewalks, which can stay icy in shaded stretches even after plowing. Gloves and a hat are non-negotiable most weeks.
Spring (April – May)
Pack for both winter and summer at once. Snow is still possible into April, but a 60-degree afternoon is just as likely by early May. Waterproof shoes cover more scenarios than any other single item this time of year.
One Thing Guests Forget
A reusable water bottle. The elevation here is higher than most guests are used to, and staying hydrated makes a noticeable difference if you're doing any hiking or the Mickelson Trail during your stay.
