The Ground We're Built On
Golden Island Resort & Casino takes its name from a claim staked on this exact wedge of ground during the first months of the Black Hills Gold Rush — long before anyone imagined a hotel would sit here.
The Original Island Claim
In the fall of 1876, a prospector named Silas Corcoran staked a modest placer claim on a wedge of high ground where two channels of Whitewood Creek split apart and rejoined a few hundred yards downstream. During spring runoff the wedge sat entirely surrounded by moving water, and the miners working the gulch above started calling it simply "the Island." Corcoran's claim never made him rich, but it produced steadily for more than a decade, and the name outlasted every owner who came after him.
By the time the placer gold ran thin in the late 1880s, "the Island" had become a fixture of local shorthand — a landmark used in property surveys and old-timers' directions long after the original claim markers had rotted away.
A Town Votes to Reinvest in Itself
Deadwood's Main Street spent much of the twentieth century slowly emptying out as the mines that built it wound down. In November 1989, South Dakota voters approved limited-stakes gaming inside Deadwood's historic district, with a share of gaming tax revenue earmarked specifically to restore the town's aging storefronts and boardwalks. The first casino floors opened within days, and Main Street began filling back in almost immediately.
Golden Island Resort & Casino opened two years later, in 1991, built on the same wedge of ground the old claim once occupied. We kept the name as a nod to the ground itself — and to the miners who worked it more than a century before the first slot machine ever arrived on Main Street.
A Full Resort, Not Just a Casino Floor
What started as a single gaming hall on the old claim has grown into a full resort — 168 rooms and suites, a bathhouse spa, four dining rooms, a glass-roofed pool, and event space that hosts everything from trade conferences to Main Street weddings. The gaming floor is still central to who we are, but it's one amenity among several, not the whole story.
