The Best Time of Year to Visit Deadwood and the Black Hills

Ask five different guests what the "right" time to visit is and you'll get five different opinions, usually depending on whether they came for the pool, the tables, or the quiet. Warm months pack Main Street and the pool deck alike. Cold months empty the gaming floor out and drop the room rates. There's a real argument for the stretch in between, too.

Spring (April – May)

Spring in the Black Hills arrives later than most of the country expects. Snow can still fall into early April at this elevation, but by May the ridgelines are green again and the tourist season hasn't ramped up yet. Room rates during April and early May tend to sit noticeably below peak summer pricing, which makes spring a strong pick for guests who want mild weather without the July crowds.

Summer (June – August)

Summer is peak season on Main Street, and for good reason — the Black Hills are green, the pool deck runs at full capacity, and the event calendar fills up with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally spillover in early August and the Days of '76 celebration in late July. The tradeoff is exactly what you'd expect: higher rates, busier restaurants, and cabanas that book out days in advance on weekends. If you're set on a summer trip, booking your room and any cabana rental at least three to four weeks out is worth doing.

Fall (September – October)

Fall is arguably the most underrated stretch of the year here. The aspens along the ridgelines turn gold by late September, the pool deck is noticeably quieter than August, and rates start easing back down after Labor Day. The first hard frost usually holds off until mid-October, which leaves a solid window of mild days and cool nights.

Late September through mid-October is when our own staff tends to book personal trips into the Hills — the color is at its peak and Main Street is quiet enough to actually enjoy.

Winter (November – March)

Winter brings the lowest room rates of the year and a noticeably slower pace around the resort. Snow settles into the hills and stays through much of the season, but our indoor pool, bathhouse spa, and gaming floor run at full operation year-round under the glass roof, which makes winter a good fit for guests more interested in the spa and dining side of the resort than outdoor hiking.

The Takeaway
